Kolkata, April 25 (IANS). The Election Commission on Saturday evening ordered the change of in-charges of three police stations in Kolkata. These also include the police station under whose jurisdiction the official residence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee falls.
The transfer of these three officers-in-charge, all of whom are Inspector rank police officers, comes less than four days before assembly constituencies in the state capital Kolkata go to polls in the second phase of the two-phase assembly elections in West Bengal on April 29.
In the second phase, voting will be held on April 29 in a total of 142 assembly constituencies, which also includes Kolkata areas.
Utpal Ghosh, in-charge of Kalighat police station, is one of the three in-charges under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police whose transfer has been ordered by the Election Commission on Saturday evening. The Chief Minister’s official residence located on Harish Chatterjee Street comes under the jurisdiction of this police station.
Gautam Das has been appointed in place of Utpal Ghosh, who was earlier posted as Inspector in the Special Branch of Kolkata Police.
The Election Commission has also ordered the transfer of Additional Incharge of Kalighat Police Station, Uttam Paik. Apart from this, the Commission has also ordered to change the in-charges of Alipore and Ultadanga Mahila Police Stations. Subrata Pandey has been made the new in-charge of Alipore Police Station.
The Election Commission has also changed the in-charge of Ultadanga Mahila Police Station. Chameli Mukherjee has been given the charge of this police station. She was earlier the additional in-charge of Alipore police station.
The transfer of both the in-charge and additional in-charge of Kalighat police station is important for two reasons. First, the official residence of the Chief Minister falls under the jurisdiction of Kalighat police station.
Secondly, Kalighat Police Station is one of the police stations under Bhawanipur assembly constituency of South Kolkata. This time, Bhawanipur is considered to be the most high-profile assembly constituency in the West Bengal assembly elections, because here Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari are face to face.
