Kolkata, April 25 (IANS). Kolkata Police has taken several stringent steps to further strengthen security in the city ahead of the second phase of assembly elections to be held on April 29.

This time, Lalbazar (city police headquarters) has ordered that all small and big hotels and lodges in the city be kept under surveillance. Also, there is an emphasis on gathering detailed information about guests, such as who is coming from where, why they are coming and for how long they are staying.

According to the police, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand has directed every police station in the city to keep a close watch on all the hotels, guest houses and lodges present in their respective areas. Before the elections, special emphasis is being laid on keeping an eye on the activities of people coming from outside.

Hotel officials have been asked to check the valid identity cards of every guest and share the information with the local police station.

A senior Lalbazar official said, “The number of people coming to the city from outside increases during elections. This step has been taken to ensure that no person is involved in any kind of disturbance or illegal activities during this period.”

Police officers from different police stations of Kolkata are already visiting different areas and meeting hotel owners and informing them about the new rules. Police have also said that not only big hotels, but also small lodges and budget guest houses are being brought under surveillance, as identity checks are sometimes lax at such places.

Apart from this, additional police personnel have been deployed at night check-points, mobile patrolling and at important places. Surveillance has been increased at railway stations, bus stands and entry points into the city.

Officers are now directly involved in night naka checks. Two IPS officers have been deployed at every important check-post to ensure strict surveillance and eliminate any negligence.
