Srinagar, June 9 (IANS). National Conference (NC) Lok Sabha member Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Tuesday said he will join the party’s protest at Jantar Mantar, but stressed that the restoration of Article 370 of the Constitution should be the main issue of the protest.
Speaking to reporters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama, Aga Ruhullah said that they would definitely participate in the protest, but stressed that the struggle should not be limited to a one-day political event.
He called for a sustained and organized movement and argued that the demands should not be limited to statehood, but should also include the restoration of constitutional protections that existed before 2019.
He said a single demonstration would not suffice and stressed the need for a sustained political campaign reflecting broader concerns, including the rights and security of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The MP also raised the problems faced by the young generation in the post-2019 period and said that justice is essential for lasting peace.
Expressing concern over land rights, jobs and reservation policies, he alleged that local people were being deprived of their fair share. Citing examples of rural areas including Pulwama, he said the restrictions affecting agriculture and livelihoods point to alleged systemic injustice.
Ruhullah Mehdi said major political and administrative commitments have not yet been fulfilled and added that better governance could reduce tensions, but unresolved issues continue to fuel public discontent.
Reiterating his stance, he said that ‘lasting peace’ can be achieved only through ‘justice’ and not through symbolic measures.
Aga Ruhullah Mehdi has accused the National Congress (NC) of not taking adequate steps to fulfill the promises made to the public in the 2024 election manifesto on the basis of which the party came to power. Due to this allegation, Agha Ruhullah Mehdi has distanced himself from the party leadership.
The NC leadership is not inviting Aga Ruhullah Mehdi to its meetings, and the MPs are also maintaining distance from party affairs.
