New Delhi, October 25 (IANS). According to the information given by the Ministry of Mines on Saturday, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the Center for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET), Hyderabad were recognized by the Ministry as Centers of Excellence (CoE) under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM).
The official statement said that these COEs will conduct innovative and transformational research in the field of critical minerals while enhancing the science and technology capabilities of the country.
On behalf of the Ministry, it was said that this decision will be taken by the Project Approval and Advisory Committee (PAAC) on 24 October 2025 under the chairmanship of Piyush Goyal, Secretary, Ministry of Mines, and Professor, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology. Taken after the approval given in the meeting co-chaired by Abhay Karandikar.
Critical raw materials form vital supply chains for emerging sectors such as clean energy and mobility transitions. Apart from this, these materials are also very important for advanced technology and strategic sectors like electronics, defense and space.
National Critical Mineral Mission has been launched by the Central Government in 2025 to establish a strong framework towards achieving self-reliance in the critical mineral sector.
Under this mission, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has been tasked to conduct 1,200 exploration projects from 2024-25 to 2030-31.
India aims to reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.
Along with this, the country is also moving forward on the path of net-zero emissions by 2070. MCMM is playing a vital role in achieving these climate goals by building a strong and self-reliant regime for critical minerals.
This special mission focuses on streamlining regulations to encourage private sector participation, strengthen international partnerships and promote domestic production while ensuring a steady supply of minerals required for clean energy technologies.
