New Delhi, January 3 (IANS). Indians have lost over Rs 52,976 crore in various frauds and forgery cases in the last six years, with Maharashtra recording the highest financial loss. This has been revealed in a report on Saturday.

According to data compiled by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, a loss of about Rs 19,813 crore and 2,177,524 complaints related to fraud were reported in 2025.

The loss recorded in 2024 was Rs 22,849.49 crore and 1,918,852 complaints were registered. The amount was lower than that recorded in previous years, pointing to a worrying rise in financial crimes such as financial crimes, digital arrests, online scams and banking frauds.

Analysts have attributed this rapid growth to rapid digitization and increase in online transactions.

According to a report, data showed that Maharashtra suffered the highest economic loss in fraud cases last year, amounting to Rs 3,203 crore, and 2,833,20 complaints were filed for the same. This was followed by Karnataka, where there was a loss of Rs 2,413 crore and 2,132,28 complaints were registered.

The report said there was a loss of Rs 1,897 crore in Tamil Nadu and 123,290 complaints were filed. Uttar Pradesh suffered a loss of Rs 1,443 crore and 275,264 complaints were filed and Telangana suffered a loss of Rs 1,372 crore and 95,000 complaints were filed. These top five states are responsible for more than half of the national total losses.

The data showed that out of Rs 19,812 crore, 77 per cent was in the name of investment schemes, 8 per cent through digital arrest, 7 per cent through credit card fraud, 4 per cent through sextortion, 3 per cent through e-commerce fraud and 1 per cent through app/malware based fraud.
