Srinagar, May 30 (IANS). Jammu and Kashmir Cyber Crime Department on Saturday issued an advisory to the general public amid increasing cases of online fraud and digital scams.

A statement from the Cyber Crime Department urged the public to beware of cyber criminals who use fake calls, phishing links, OTP fraud and suspicious online requests to target unsuspecting people.

The advisory comes at a time when cyber-related complaints are rising across the region and fraudsters are increasingly using deceptive digital methods to gain unauthorized access to personal information, financial details and social media accounts.

Officials advised the public to avoid clicking on suspicious or unknown links. Avoid sharing one-time passwords (OTPs) and verify unknown phone numbers or online requests before responding.

The department also urged users to strengthen the security of messaging applications, especially WhatsApp, and implement ‘two-step verification’ as an additional security measure against unauthorized access and identity theft attempts.

Officials warned that fraudsters often impersonate bank representatives, government officials, customer care executives, or even acquaintances, to trick victims into sharing confidential information or transferring money.

The Cyber Crime Department said it is extremely important to immediately report cyber fraud cases, especially those involving financial transactions; Because prompt intervention can increase the chances of stopping suspicious transactions and recovering money.

Citizens have been urged to immediately report incidents of cyber fraud to the police, or report through the ‘National Cyber Crime Portal’ and seek assistance through the dedicated cyber helpline number 1930.

This advisory is a part of the Department’s ongoing awareness campaign aimed at enhancing digital security and promoting responsible online behavior amid increasing dependence on internet-based services and communication platforms.

Apart from the Cyber Crime Department, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and various banks operating under its control in the country are also regularly advising depositors not to share their account information, OTP, Aadhaar card and other personal identity details through phone calls or with fraudsters who present themselves as genuine representatives of financial institutions.
