Ruckus over OpenAI deal with Pentagon! People in America are uninstalling ChatGPT, know what is the whole controversy

A big controversy has arisen in the US regarding AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman himself issued a lengthy statement on social media, in which he attempted to clarify the purpose and limitations of the agreement his company signed with the US Department of Defense. According to reports, uninstallations of the ChatGPT app in the US increased by almost 295 percent in a single day. This is not just about a contract; It is now directly linked to AI, war, and civil rights.

Sam Altman said in his post that OpenAI has made some important changes to its agreement with the Department of Defense. He told that this is to ensure that the company’s AI system will not be used to keep an eye on American citizens. He clearly said that AI will be used within the ambit of law and will not be intentionally used for domestic surveillance. Altman also said that if any illegal order comes from the government, they will not follow it. He argues that the democratic process is supreme and that the government should take decisions, and not let a private company decide the future of the world. But this is where the controversy started.

Why did the anger increase?

A TechCrunch report said that as soon as the news spread that OpenAI was working with the US Department of Defense, a large number of people started deleting the ChatGPT app. The number of uninstallers increased by 295 percent in just one day. People on social media raised questions whether AI is now becoming a part of the war machine. Some users say that AI companies should keep distance from the military. Others also argue that if AI is so powerful, it should work responsibly with the government so that it does not fall into the wrong hands.

Why did the name Anthropic come into the picture?

Another AI company, Anthropic, is being mentioned in this controversy. According to reports, Anthropic did not agree with the Department of Defense on certain conditions and clearly stated that its technology should not be used in mass surveillance or autonomous weapons. Subsequently, OpenAI took the deal forward. This has intensified the debate about where AI companies are headed. Are they strengthening security by working with the government or are they following a dangerous path?

What did Altman believe?

Sam Altman also admitted in his post that communication about the deal could have been better. He said that this is a difficult matter and making it public so soon was probably not the right approach. He said that the technology is not yet fully ready in many cases and it is necessary to be extremely careful regarding security. He also said that in the future, OpenAI will work with the government on technical safeguards and safeguards to prevent misuse of AI.

Why is all this important now?

The world is currently going through a period of war and geopolitical tension. The role of AI in cyber attacks, drone technology, data analysis and intelligence is increasing rapidly. At a time like this, if a big AI company works directly with the Department of Defense, it’s no longer just technology news; This becomes a matter of national security and civil liberty. On the one hand, governments claim that AI will strengthen national security. On the other hand, civil rights groups warn that the scope of surveillance and data control can be dangerous.

What is the real question?

This whole controversy has only one meaning: Who will control AI? Democratic oversight of the government, private companies, or the public? Sam Altman argues that democracy should be in control, and AI should empower people, not take away from them. However, a portion of the public is still not convinced, as uninstall statistics show. This issue may become even bigger in the future, as AI is no longer just a chatbot. It is becoming a part of security, war, cyber operations and strategic decisions. In such a situation, every deal, every statement and every decision will become a topic of global debate. And that’s why this deal between the Pentagon and OpenAI is not just a contract, but has become a story that will decide the direction of the future of AI.

What did Sam Altman clarify in his tweet?

In his lengthy post, Sam Altman first said that specific language was added to the agreement between OpenAI and the US Department of Defense to ensure that the company’s principles were clear. He wrote that AI systems would not be used intentionally to monitor American citizens. Citing laws like the US Constitution, Fourth Amendment and FISA, he said that everything will be done within the legal framework.

Privacy advocates consider it a sham

Altman also clarified that the Department of Defense understands that this limitation is not just on paper, but means that OpenAI’s technology will not be used for any kind of tracking, surveillance or monitoring. This means that the company wants to show that it will not back down when it comes to the privacy of citizens. However, experts believe that this is just a show to avoid losing trust in the company. He also said another important thing. If an intelligence agency like the NSA wants OpenAI’s services, a separate contract modification would be required. This means the current deal does not automatically give access to all agencies.

Altman also acknowledged that this decision is a very sensitive one, as the technology is not ready for everything, and many tradeoffs have yet to be fully understood. According to him, it is a learning process, and security measures will be further strengthened in the future. At the end of his post, Altman said that the world is changing rapidly, and the relationship between governments and tech companies on AI will be vital. He believes that the democratic process should be controlled, and that no private company should dictate the direction of the world. However, he also noted that the risks of misuse of AI are real, and dialogue with governments is important.
