Mumbai, October 9 (IANS). Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said his meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strengthened the trade and economic partnership between the two countries for mutual prosperity.
British PM Starmer arrived on a two-day visit to India on Wednesday, accompanied by the largest ever business delegation from Britain to India.
Union Minister Goyal posted on social media platform X, “Pleased to meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. We discussed ways to strengthen the India-British trade and economic partnership for mutual prosperity.”
Union Minister Goyal earlier met UK Business and Trade Minister Peter Kyle with the aim of implementing the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and doubling bilateral trade by 2030.
According to the Commerce Ministry statement, “The meeting is an important step towards implementing the India-UK CETA, with both Ministers agreeing to reconstitute the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) to oversee its implementation and implementation.”
Both sides underlined their commitment to ensure swift, coordinated and result-oriented implementation of the Agreement, with the aim of harnessing its full potential for businesses and consumers of both countries.
The Ministers reaffirmed their shared ambition to double bilateral trade by 2030, taking advantage of complementarities between the two economies in areas such as advanced manufacturing, digital trade, clean energy and services.
They emphasized the transformative scope of CETA and discussed ways to maximize its benefits through regulatory cooperation, removing non-tariff barriers, and promoting supply chain integration.
The highly productive meeting at the Commerce Secretary and Director General levels set the tone for the Ministerial meeting, which laid a strong foundation for the engaging and forward-looking discussions that followed throughout the day.
Ahead of the bilateral meeting, several regional roundtable meetings were held in the priority areas of Advanced Manufacturing, Consumer Goods, Food and Drink, Science, Technology and Innovation, Construction, Infrastructure and Clean Energy, and Financial, Professional and Business Services (including IT/ITES, Education and Engineering).
