New Delhi, October 29 (IANS). World Stroke Day is celebrated every year on 29 October to make people aware about stroke. Nitin Kamath, co-founder and CEO of Zerodha, said on Wednesday that every minute is very precious at the time of stroke.

He told that if a person has a stroke, it is important to get immediate treatment within 4.5 hours. After his own experience of going through a neurological problem, he advised people to seek timely medical help.

Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain stops. During stroke, brain cells get destroyed every second, so it is very important to take timely treatment and medicine. This can save lives and increase the chances of recovery.

Nitin Kamath, who recovered from a stroke last year, took to social media platform He said that if timely treatment is not received, permanent damage to the brain can occur and the risk of disability increases.

He said that many people ignore the symptoms of stroke, thinking that they are absolutely fine and nothing will happen to them.

“When I had my stroke in January, if there was one thing I would have done differently, it would have been to go to the hospital immediately during the ‘golden hour’ (within four and a half hours) instead of sleeping it off,” Kamath wrote in a post on social media platform X.

“The attitude of ‘Nothing will happen to me’ is very common, especially among people under 50,” he said. He said that in the last few years, cases of stroke among people below 50 years of age have increased rapidly.

Kamath said, “The truth is that stroke cases are increasing rapidly. In the last few years, about 30 percent of the total stroke cases are patients in the age group of 30 to 50 years.”

“In case of stroke, time is of the essence, every minute is precious,” he said.

About 80 percent of strokes can be prevented with simple and consistent measures. These include: keeping blood pressure and diabetes under control, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and keeping cholesterol under control.

According to Kolkata-based neurologist Dr Deep Das, recognizing the symptoms of stroke is the first step, and this can be easily remembered with the ‘BE FAST’ method.
