When it comes to wheeled vehicles on other planets there are few first-time occurrences that measure the importance of a first drive, said Anais Zarifian, a Perseverance Rover Mobility Test Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. He said that this was the first time for us to take it some distance with the wheels running. The six wheeled rover’s drive was excellent. We are now confident that our drive going forward will be perfect and will be able to provide mission related information for the next two years.
Launched on 30th July
The rover was launched on July 30 last year from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in the US state of Florida. It reached the Red Planet on 18 February after a 203-day journey of 472 million km.
