NASA's Perseverance Rover did a 6.5 meter walk on Mars!

When the rover begins its ‘mission’, it is expected to run for 200 meters on a regular basis.

Washington, March 6 (IANS) | US space agency NASA’s Perseverance rover on Friday walked 6.5 meters for the first time on Mars. According to the news agency Xinhua, the operation lasted about 33 minutes, which pushed the rover forward by four meters. Here it then turned 150 degrees to the left and back 2.5 meters to its new temporary parking space. According to NASA, by driving the Perseverance rover on the surface of Mars, scientists wanted to be sure to examine every aspect of it – subsystems and dynamics.

This is what NASA said about the mission

NASA said that once the rover begins its ‘mission’, it is expected to run for 200 meters on a regular basis. “As the mission begins, the first trek of the agency’s largest, most advanced rover to the Red Planet yet will mark a major milestone,” NASA said in a statement.

When it comes to wheeled vehicles on other planets there are few first-time occurrences that measure the importance of a first drive, said Anais Zarifian, a Perseverance Rover Mobility Test Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. He said that this was the first time for us to take it some distance with the wheels running. The six wheeled rover’s drive was excellent. We are now confident that our drive going forward will be perfect and will be able to provide mission related information for the next two years.

Launched on 30th July

The rover was launched on July 30 last year from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in the US state of Florida. It reached the Red Planet on 18 February after a 203-day journey of 472 million km.

The search for life on Mars is the goal

Its primary mission is to search for signs of ancient life on Mars. It will also explore the characteristics of Mars’ geology and past climate. will pave the way for human exploration on the Red Planet.
