After a series of earthquakes in eastern Afghanistan, in which more than 800 people were killed and more than 2800 injured, India has provided immediate humanitarian aid to support relief efforts in the region.

In a post on X on Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “India is providing humanitarian aid to Afghanistan in view of the earthquake.”

A post mentions assistance, which includes pictures of trucks loaded with sacks of rice and other foods, which symbolizes India’s commitment to stand with Afghanistan in this challenging time.

According to the National Earthquake Science Center (NCS), a powerful earthquake of 6.3 intensity occurred on the Richter scale in Afghanistan on Monday morning, with shocks, including parts of Pakistan, all over the region. This was followed by several tremors of 4 to 5 intensity.

According to a report released by the United Nations Coordination Office (UNOCHA), the earthquake came near the Pakistan border in Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, which was in Cama district of the area.

UNOCHA reported that according to preliminary reports, at least 800 people have been killed in four provinces Kunar, Laghaman, Nangarhar and Nuristan, and 12,000 people have been directly affected.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that he spoke to Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Mawalvi Amir Khan Mottaki and expressed condolences on the loss of life and property in the earthquake in Afghanistan.

He further stated that India has already sent relief material to Afghanistan, in which 1000 family tents have been sent to Kabul and 15 tonnes of food items have been transported from Kabul to Kunar by the Indian mission.

He said, “Today, Afghan Foreign Minister Mawalvi spoke to Amir Khan Muttaki. He expressed his condolences on the loss of life and property. It was reported that India has delivered 1000 family tents in Kabul today. The Indian mission is also delivering 15 tonnes of food from Kabul to Kunar.”

Jaishankar said in a post on X, “More relief materials will be sent from India from tomorrow. I wish the injured to recover early. India stands with Afghanistan in this difficult time.”

According to Al Jazira, at least 812 people have lost their lives and 2,817 people have been injured in the earthquake, quoting Afghan government spokesperson Jabhullah Mujahid.
