The ritual of washing the holy Kaaba is a very important and old tradition in Saudi Arabia. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) or the deputy governor of Mecca often performs this ritual on behalf of King Salman, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. This ritual is performed twice a year, with one occasion falling around the 15th of Sha’ban, just before the start of Ramadan. This time too this tradition has been followed with full religious decorum.

Special water is prepared to wash the Kaaba.
No ordinary water is used to clean the Holy Kaaba. A special mixture is prepared for this. In this, ‘Zamzam’ water is mixed with expensive rose water of Taif, finest oud and musk.
The inner walls of the Kaaba are wiped with a white cloth soaked in this fragrant water. After washing the floor is dried with palm leaves and fine cotton cloth. The administration maintains the highest standards of cleanliness and sanctity during this time to keep the structure safe.
What happens during the ritual?
This ritual is completely private and common people or pilgrims are not allowed inside at that time. Before and after starting the ritual the officials perform Tawaf and offer two Rakat prayers inside the Kaaba.
During this time, members of the ‘Bani Shaiba’ family, who have been guarding the keys of the Kaaba for generations, open the golden door. On this occasion, members of the Saudi Royal Family, Hajj and Umrah Ministers and ambassadors of Islamic countries are present.
