New Delhi, December 3 (IANS). Cholesterol does not always harm our health. It is an essential fat produced in the body, which performs many important functions, from producing hormones to producing Vitamin D and protecting cells.

The problem arises when its quantity exceeds the requirement. In Ayurveda this condition is called rakta meda roshti, where the poor quality of fat makes the blood sticky and slows down the flow.

There are three main types of cholesterol: LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. LDL is called bad cholesterol because it sticks to the artery walls and forms plaque over time. Due to this the heart tubes become narrow. HDL, on the other hand, is good cholesterol, which removes unwanted LDL from the body and transports it to the liver. The correct amount of HDL in women is considered to be above 50 mg per deciliter. The third is triglycerides, which are formed from excess sugar and carbs and increase rapidly in winter due to excessive consumption of sweets.

The risk of increasing cholesterol is also high because it gradually hardens the arteries. This further increases BP and increases the risk of heart attack. What many people don’t know is that poor blood flow also deprives the brain of oxygen, leading to brain fog, forgetfulness and a feeling of heaviness. Increased swelling in the body, fatigue, lack of sleep and pain in joints also fall in this category.

Talking about home remedies, lukewarm water and a little lemon on an empty stomach in the morning helps in reducing the stickiness of the body. 5 almonds and 1 walnut daily is an easy way to increase HDL. Eating fenugreek seeds soaked overnight, 1–2 cloves of garlic on an empty stomach, and turmeric milk at night can all help in reducing fat deposits in the body and reduce swelling.

A brisk walk of 20 minutes every day is also very effective. Taking barley or sattu sherbet twice a week and eating 70 percent full stomach are also good habits. Not eating fried foods and sweets together and light home remedies like coriander and water can also be helpful in keeping weight and lipid levels balanced.
