New Delhi, December 19 (IANS). 93 airports in India are now using 100 percent green energy. This means that the power and energy requirements at these airports are being met in a clean and environment-friendly manner. This information was given by the government on Friday.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol told the Lok Sabha that Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru airports have achieved the highest level (Level 5) of reducing carbon emissions. According to the Airports International Council, these airports have now become carbon neutral, that is, they emit almost no gases that harm the environment.

The government also plans to promote Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for international flights. Under this, a target has been set to mix 1 percent green fuel in normal aviation fuel by 2027, 2 percent by 2028 and 5 percent by 2030.

He informed that the government has formulated a Greenfield Airport Policy for the development of Greenfield airports across the country. Under this, if any state government or private company wants to build a new airport, it will have to submit a proposal to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA).

The minister said that development of new and old airports will help in achieving the goal of a developed India. With this, remote areas will be connected to the country and the world, tourism and trade will increase, logistics will improve and new employment opportunities will be created.

He emphasized that major greenfield airports like Navi Mumbai International Airport will improve connectivity, drive growth of industries and cities in the surrounding areas and increase investment. Besides, this will also help in becoming an industrial corridor and logistics hub.

The government is also promoting manufacturing of aircraft and related accessories in India under the ‘Make in India’ scheme. For this, facilities like improvement in GST rates, removal of royalty, easing of visa rules for foreign pilots and technical staff and relaxation in rules on items brought for repair are being provided.
