The record breaking snowfall in Japan for the last two weeks has completely halted normal life. The effect of this snow storm, which started around January 20, has become more dangerous as February approaches. According to the latest information, at least 30 people have lost their lives so far in this disaster. The situation has become so serious that the Army (Self-Defense Forces) had to be deployed to help in many areas.
Which areas suffered the most damage?
The worst effect of snowfall was seen in Niigata Prefecture, where 12 people alone died. Apart from this, 6 people have lost their lives in Akita, 4 in Aomori and 3 in Hokkaido. Officials have said that deaths have occurred in 8 states of the country and about 324 people have been injured in 12 states. The dead included many elderly people who were trying to clear snow from their homes or rooftops.
183 cm snow fell in one day
The weather was so severe that 183 cm of snow fell in just one day on February 1, 2026 in Aomori. This is almost three times more than the normal average. More than 1 meter of snow has also accumulated in Sapporo city. In view of the situation, the Aomori administration has sought help from the army for the first time since 2005 to prevent buildings from collapsing due to heavy snow.
Bad effect on trains and flights
Due to bad weather the traffic system has completely broken down. Around 1,400 train services had to be canceled for three consecutive days starting January 25, causing inconvenience to more than 4 lakh passengers. Additionally, about 9,000 passengers were also left stranded at New Chitose Airport as trains were closed and flights were cancelled. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has held a special cabinet meeting to speed up relief efforts.
