New Delhi, March 11 (IANS). According to Ayurveda, Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) are the three basic energies that control the body, which is directly related to our food. When these three doshas remain in balance, the body feels healthy and energetic. But if their balance gets disturbed, many types of physical and mental problems can start. Therefore, it is important to understand which taste aggravates which dosha and which pacifies it.

In Ayurveda, the six main tastes of food are Madhur (sweet), Amla (sour), Lavana (salty), Katu (pungent), Tikta (bitter) and Kashaya (astringent). These juices have different effects on the doshas of our body.

Tastes that aggravate Vata dosha include pungent, bitter and astringent juices. If a person eats too much spicy or bitter food, Vata can be aggravated, causing problems like gas, dryness, restlessness or joint pain. Sweet, salty and sour tastes are considered beneficial for balancing Vata. Also, consumption of hot and slightly oily food also helps in pacifying Vata.

Now let’s talk about Pitta Dosha. Pitta is considered to be related to body heat and digestive power. Pungent, sour and salty tastes can increase pitta. If a person eats too much spicy or sour food, heat in the body may increase, causing acidity, burning sensation, irritability or skin problems. Sweet, bitter and astringent tastes are considered better for pacifying Pitta. Cool and light foods, such as green vegetables and fruits, help keep pitta balanced.

Kapha dosha is related to stability, moisture and strength of the body. Sweet, salty and sour tastes can increase phlegm. If these flavors are consumed in excess, problems like heaviness, lethargy, weight gain or mucus may occur in the body. Pungent, bitter and astringent tastes are considered useful in reducing phlegm. Light, hot and spicy food helps in balancing Kapha.
