South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Monday and expressed his grave concerns about the security of ships in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the South Korean Foreign Ministry, during this conversation he also mentioned the impact of the war on the global economy. South Korea’s main objective is to ensure the safety of the ships and sailors who are currently stuck there due to tensions.
What is the current situation of ships in the Strait of Hormuz?
Due to the ongoing tension in the Strait of Hormuz, many South Korean ships have been affected there. According to reports, currently about 26 South Korean ships are stranded there, with a total of 179 sailors on board. The South Korean government has demanded Iran to ensure the safe return and safe passage of all these ships and crew members. South Korea has joined the 22 countries that have opposed this blockade of Iran.
Information about the impact on global economy and security
More than 40 citizens of South Korea are currently present in Iran, whose security is a priority. Stopping trade through the Strait of Hormuz could have a negative impact on oil prices and supply chains around the world. South Korea has supported the safe passage but has not yet made any promise on the US demand to send warships there. Countries like Britain, France and Japan are also standing with South Korea in support of the demand for this safe passage. An appeal has been made to Iran to allow the ships to pass without any hindrance under international rules.
