Hyderabad, May 3 (IANS). Traffic police in Hyderabad and Cyberabad have taken major action against drunk driving during a special campaign conducted over the weekend. A total of more than 700 people were arrested in this operation.

Hyderabad Traffic Police conducted a two-day special operation on May 1 and 2, in which 445 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol. These include 371 two-wheeler drivers, 26 three-wheeler drivers and 48 four-wheeler and other vehicle drivers.

The police divided these accused into different categories based on their blood alcohol concentration (BAC). According to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), BAC levels were found to be 30-50 mg/100 ml in 99 cases, 51-100 in 173 cases, 101-150 in 100 cases, 151-200 in 42 cases, 201-250 in 11 cases, 251-300 in 12 cases and 8 cases. More than 300 were recorded.

At the same time, Cyberabad Traffic Police also conducted a special campaign on the weekend and caught 283 people while driving under the influence. These include 227 two-wheeler drivers, 9 three-wheeler drivers, 39 four-wheeler drivers and 8 heavy vehicle drivers.

According to Cyberabad police, 222 people were found to have BAC levels between 36 to 200 mg/100 ml, 33 people were found to be between 201 to 300 mg/100 ml and 28 people were found to be between 301 to 550 mg/100 ml.

Police said that all the accused will be presented in the court. Additional Commissioner of Police G. Hanamantha Rao said that driving under the influence is a serious crime. If a person causes someone’s death while driving while intoxicated, he will be booked under Section 105 of the Indian Judicial Code 2023, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years and fine.

During the last week (April 27 to May 2), 160 cases were disposed of in the court. Of these, 12 people were ordered to do social service along with fine, while 148 people were only fined.

The traffic police has clearly stated that ‘zero tolerance’ policy is being adopted in cases of drunk and driving and this campaign will continue in future also. People have been appealed to follow the rules and give priority to safe driving.
