Amravati, May 24 (IANS). The Andhra Pradesh government on Sunday issued an alert in view of the increasing cases of Ebola virus in several African countries. State health officials have started screening travelers coming from Ebola-affected countries.
State Medical and Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav announced that necessary precautionary measures have been implemented in the state in view of the wide spread of Ebola virus in several African countries, rising cases and increase in mortality rate.
He expressed particular concern over the rapid spread of the Ebola virus in countries such as Congo, Uganda and South Sudan.
Based on the warnings issued by the World Health Organization and specific guidelines, advice and recommendations received from the Central Government, the Minister of State announced that the Department of Medical and Health is fully prepared to effectively prevent the spread of Ebola virus and manage potential cases.
He said that the Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda is becoming serious day by day. In view of the situation, the Minister announced that measures are being taken to ensure close coordination between the airport authorities and medical and health department officials of the respective districts.
The coordination is aimed at facilitating screening and diagnostic testing of passengers and tourists arriving into the state from Congo, Uganda and Sudan through the international airports of Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Vijayawada.
The minister said that persons displaying symptoms of the virus will be immediately quarantined and those who came in contact with them will undergo immediate medical examination.
Additionally, he informed that discussions have been held with Visakhapatnam port authorities and the district administration has been instructed to implement appropriate precautionary measures. He said that necessary measures will be implemented not only through air travel but also in respect of persons arriving by road.
The minister said that the central government is keeping a close watch on the details of travelers entering the country from countries affected by the Ebola virus and is accordingly sending necessary information to the concerned states.
Citing experiences gained during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said an action plan is being prepared to outline the precautionary measures and steps to be taken in case of an Ebola-related emergency.
