New Delhi, 26 September (IANS). The 100 percent tariffs imposed on the import of pharma products by US President Donald Trump will not have much impact on the exports from India. This information was given by experts on Friday.

Experts reported that the 100 percent tariff imposed by the US for the import of Ferma products is only for branded and patented drugs. This is not for generic drugs and is the highest share of generic drugs from India to the US.

Namit Joshi, chairman of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmaxil) Namit Joshi said, “The proposed 100 percent tariffs proposed on branded and patented pharmaceuticals are unlikely to have immediate effect on Indian exports, as most of our exports are from generic medicines, while most of the large Indian companies are already in further manufacturing or repairing units in the US. Are exploring the possibilities of acquisition. “

Sudarshan Jain, general secretary of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, said, “The executive order applies to patent/branded products supplied to the US. This does not apply to generic drugs.”

Currently, India supplies more than 45 percent of generics and 15 percent of biosimiler drugs used in the United States.

America is India’s largest drug export market. According to Pharmaxil, in FY 2024, India was made to the United States in FY 2024, 31 percent or $ 8.7 billion (Rs 7,72,31 crore) out of India’s $ 27.9 billion drug exports. In the first half of 2025, drug products worth $ 3.7 billion (Rs 32,505 crore) were exported.

Joshi said, “India has long been the basis of the global supply chain of cheap and high quality drugs and especially in generic drugs supplies about 47 percent of the US drug requirements.”

AIMED forum coordinator Rajiv Nath said, “Hopefully, this new round of tariffs on medicines will not have any effect on medical equipment.”

Following the new announcement of the US administration, the shares of pharmaceutical companies declined by up to 5 percent. Major pharmaceutical companies like Sun Pharma, Biocon, Zidas Lifesains, Aurobindo Pharma, Dr. Reddy, Lupine, Cipla and Torrent Pharma were in red mark.
