Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday informed Taliban-ruled Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki that India would reopen its embassy in Kabul. During the keynote address, Jaishankar said, “Your visit is a very important step in furthering India-Afghanistan relations. As a well-wisher of the Afghan people, India has a keen interest in the development of your country. I reiterate today that our long-standing partnership, which has supported many Indian projects in Afghanistan, will continue.”
How did Jaishankar welcome Muttaki?
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar warmly welcomed Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki and his delegation. He said that this visit is a very important opportunity to further strengthen the friendship and relations between India and Afghanistan. Jaishankar reminded that he had spoken to Muttaki on phone after incidents like Pahalgam terrorist attack and Kunar-Nangarhar earthquake. He stressed that face-to-face meetings are now extremely important.
What contribution will India make to the development of Afghanistan?
India reiterated its long-standing and long-term partnership. Both countries expressed their desire to continue the completed projects, complete the incomplete projects and work together on new priorities. Jaishankar also announced six new health projects for Afghanistan. India will also provide 20 ambulances, five of which were handed over symbolically. Apart from this, MRI and CT scan machines, vaccines and cancer medicines will also be provided. Supply of de-addiction materials will also continue.
India will also help earthquake victims
India immediately sent relief material to Afghanistan immediately after the earthquake. India has now expressed willingness to assist in rebuilding the houses. Additionally, India is continuously providing food supplies to the Afghan people. A new consignment will be delivered to Kabul the same day. India will continue to assist in the rehabilitation and construction of houses for Afghan refugees who have been forcibly repatriated.
What was discussed regarding mining areas?
India reiterated its support for Afghanistan’s water resources management and irrigation. Additionally, India appreciated Afghanistan for inviting Indian companies to invest in the mining sector and proposed further discussions on the matter. Both countries expressed satisfaction at the commencement of additional flights between Kabul and New Delhi and said opportunities for Afghan students in Indian universities will be expanded.
What was discussed regarding terrorism?
Both countries also resolved to work together against terrorism. India expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by Afghanistan after the Pahalgam attack. In the most significant announcement, India reiterated its commitment to the sovereignty and integrity of Afghanistan. Under this, India announced to upgrade its technical mission in Kabul to the level of Indian Embassy.
