The political uncertainty that has been going on in Bangladesh for the last one and a half years is now over. On Tuesday, 17 February 2026, Tariq Rehman was sworn in as the 11th Prime Minister of the country. He is the son of late former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. President Mohammad Shahabuddin administered the oath to him and his new cabinet. The ceremony was held in the South Plaza of Parliament House, which was different from the traditional venue. On this occasion, the head of the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, formally handed over power.
How is the new cabinet and who will be the ministers?
Along with Tariq Rehman, the cabinet consisting of 49 members has also taken oath. It includes 25 cabinet ministers and 24 ministers of state. 10 advisors have also been appointed to handle the work of the government immediately after the swearing-in. The biggest challenge before the new government is to reduce inflation and improve law and order. The public is hopeful that the garment industry and export work will pick up again.

Election results and India’s stance
BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party) has won a landslide victory in the 13th parliamentary elections held on 12 February. The party alliance captured 212 out of 300 seats, giving them a two-thirds majority. This time around 60% voting took place in the elections which is much better than the previous elections. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also sent a congratulatory message to Tariq Rehman and invited him to visit India. At the same time, the new government has now taken an important decision of setting a limit of ‘two terms’ for the post of Prime Minister.
