What is Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement (SMDA)?
A special agreement was signed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan on 17 September 2025, which has been named SMDA. The biggest condition of this agreement is that if there is an attack on either country, it will be considered an attack on the other country also. Both countries will take military action together.
Recently, Iran has attacked Saudi’s Ras Tanura oil refinery and Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Airport. After this, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has made it clear that if the attacks do not stop, then Pakistan will come forward to help Saudi Arabia under this agreement and can intervene in the war.
Impact on oil prices and security
Iran carried out attacks on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery and near the US Embassy in Riyadh in the first week of March. Its direct impact is on the pockets of common people. Due to these attacks, oil prices are increasing worldwide. In Pakistan, due to economic pressure, the prices of petrol and diesel have been increased drastically by Rs 55 per liter.
Even in Saudi Arabia, the security of the royal family and common citizens has been significantly increased. Especially in the diplomatic areas of Riyadh, high alert is going on and security agencies are fully prepared.
Preparations of Azerbaijan and Pakistan
On the other hand, the government of Azerbaijan is also angry after the drone attack on Nakhchivan Airport. President Ilham Aliyev has called it a terrorist attack and has instructed the army to respond. Now the situation is becoming such that Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Azerbaijan can together take a front against Iran. The Saudi Defense Ministry has also said they are working on ‘joint measures’ to prevent attacks.
